BEYOND THE SEAS AT THE END OF THE WORLD (2020)

A young writer’s odyssey through his family archive, in search of a grandfather he never met. Through the words of Bernardo Santareno, and his grandfather’s photographs, letters, scattered memories, and stories, the writer seeks to reconstruct in his imagination what a cod fishing trip through the North Sea might have looked like.

This show was born from the desire to honour and pay homage to the author Bernardo Santareno in the year of the centenary celebrations of his birth. The idea for the show comes from the combination of the photographic archive of Augusto Boffa-Molinar, a doctor on board the hospital ship Gil Eannes between 1955 and 1959, and Nos Mares do Fim do Mundo, by António Martinho de Rosário, under the name Bernardo Santareno.

These materials, together with letters, family memories, excerpts from other works by Bernardo Santareno and real testimonies, allow us to glimpse what the violence of a campaign aboard a ship in the Portuguese cod fleet would be like.

Beyond the Seas at the End of the World aims to arouse in the public the same creative impetus as a child imagining one of the many voyages these sailors took, involving them in this narrative through the reconstruction that arises from stories and photographs that were lost over time.
